Radboud UMC

At the Radboudumc Muscle Center, research focuses on the causes and treatments of the most common neuromuscular diseases in the Netherlands, including:
- Myotonic dystrophy
- Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD)
- Neuralgic amyotrophy
- Duchenne muscular dystrophy
- Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM)
- Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD)
For these six conditions, we are a nationally recognized center of expertise. Our research encompasses cutting-edge muscle studies, ranging from muscle fiber contractility to MR imaging, as well as the interplay between the brain and muscles (motor-evoked potentials and electroencephalography). We conduct translational research and clinical trials for FSHD, myotonic dystrophy, and IBM.
We regularly treat patients with these conditions and also have extensive experience with ALS, myasthenia gravis, and rarer disorders such as congenital myopathies, limb-girdle muscular dystrophies, and metabolic/mitochondrial myopathies. This is complemented by our in-house capabilities for mitochondrial analysis of muscle biopsies.
For specific complaints and conditions, we offer specialized diagnostic and treatment pathways. These include one-day evaluation programs that combine diagnostic tests and treatment recommendations. Examples include our muscle disease clinic, brachial plexus clinic, myotonic dystrophy clinic, and a transition clinic for Duchenne patients.
Our mission is to provide the best neuromuscular care in the Netherlands, combining “neuromuscular expertise embedded in attentive involvement” with “state-of-the-art technology and compassion for care.”
