Together with colleagues including Nicole Voet (Radboudumc & Klimmendaal) and Mariska Janssen (Klimmendaal), we are conducting several studies focused on exercise training, strength training, and compensation mechanisms. One of our current studies investigates strength training in individuals with FSHD. This study uses both quantitative methods—such as electromyography (EMG) and fatigue testing—and qualitative methods, including interviews. In spring 2025, we will start an intervention study to evaluate the effects of a 16-week personalized exercise program—including aerobic, strength, and balance training—on pain, fatigue, and muscle strength in individuals with FSHD. Our other studies focus more specifically on compensation mechanisms observed during walking and cycling in people with neuromuscular diseases. For these, we use motion capture systems (such as Vicon) and EMG to analyze individual movement patterns and muscle fatigue. Together, these studies aim to improve our ability to provide tailored advice on walking, cycling, and exercise training for individuals with neuromuscular diseases.
