Prof. Dr. Jan Groothuis
- Role: Full Professor, Rehabilitation physician

Since 2012, I have been working as a rehabilitation physician at Radboudumc in the field of neurorehabilitation, with a special focus on neuromuscular disorders. Within the Radboudumc Muscle Disease Center, I provide care for adults with muscle diseases and lead a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team for all muscle disorders, with special expertise in FSHD, myotonic dystrophy, Duchenne, neuralgic amyotrophy, inclusion body myositis, and mitochondrial myopathies. Additionally, we have significant experience with McArdle’s disease and Brody’s disease. Alongside our centers of expertise, we also have a large multidisciplinary ALS care team.
Our research focuses on innovative and efficient rehabilitation interventions for muscle diseases, aiming to improve activities and participation, as well as on functional outcome measures for studies on treatments for muscle diseases. This includes developing assistive technologies in collaboration with technical universities and industry, interventions aimed at self-management and autonomy, and preventive interventions, such as those related to employment. We participate in various natural history studies and medication trials.
My research focuses on the fundamental basis for the treatment of neuralgic amyotrophy (and other plexus injuries), the development of outcome measures, and the optimization of person-centered care for muscle diseases in general.
