Prof. Dr. Baziel van Engelen

Baziel van Engelen is a professor of Neuromuscular Disorders at Radboud University Medical Center. He studied medicine in Nijmegen and graduated cum laude in Philosophy from the University of Amsterdam in 1992. He trained in Neurology at the University of Berlin and Radboudumc. In 1995, he earned his PhD with the dissertation “A Neuro-Immunological Approach to Intractable Childhood Epilepsies”, followed by a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation in Rochester, USA. Since 2003, he has been a professor of Neuromuscular Diseases and has contributed to over 400 scientific articles.
As both a principal investigator and principal clinician, his research focuses on integrating care and recovery. He serves as Research Director of the European Neuromuscular Centre (ENMC), secretary of the Board of the Institute for Fundamental and Clinical Human Movement Sciences (Amsterdam-Nijmegen), and a board member of the Donders Institute for Neuroscience. He is also a member of several scientific advisory boards, including Muscular Dystrophy UK, FSH Global, Italian Telethon, and the Scientific Panel on Translational Neurology of the European Academy of Neurology.
Professor van Engelen is actively involved in the European Reference Network for rare neuromuscular diseases, EURO-NMD, where he serves as a board member and vice-chair of the research working group. In 2018, he was honored with the Royal Distinction of Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
