Dr. Saskia Houwen
- Role: Pediatric rehabilitation physician

Since May 2019, I have been working as a rehabilitation physician at Radboudumc in the pediatric rehabilitation department, with a special focus on neuromuscular disorders. Within the Amalia Children’s Hospital Neuromuscular Center, we support children with conditions such as SMA, congenital myopathies, myotonic dystrophy, FSHD, and mitochondrial myopathies as part of a multidisciplinary team. Together with my colleagues Imelda de Groot and Helma Hijdra, I also lead a multidisciplinary team within a specialized center for children with dystrophinopathies.
My research focuses on the challenges faced by aging patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Over recent decades, the development of life-extending therapies has significantly increased the life expectancy for these patients. However, they now encounter new challenges that are not yet well understood. My aim is to better define the scope and nature of these emerging issues. This will help identify knowledge gaps and improve care for these patients. Additionally, I contribute to ongoing research within the Rehabilitation Department.
