Transforming Neuromuscular Care: Towards Accessible, Integrated and Future-Proof Services

Summary of research

This project aims to transform fragmented neuromuscular care into a coordinated network that delivers the proper care at the right place. It started by establishing two pilot regions (Arnhem/ Nijmegen and Groningen/Friesland/Drenthe). Each region will develop a Gespecialiseerd Spierziekten team/Regional Neuromuscular Care Team (GeSp) that acts as a hub for complex care and as a bridge between academic expert centers, local health professionals, and social care providers. The project builds on a previously developed blueprint and responds to the growing number of patients, increased treatment options, and limited healthcare resources. Expected outcomes include better provider communication, more efficient care coordination, better matched care, and reduced burden on patients and caregivers. This model will serve as an example for other regions in the context of integrated care policies in the Netherlands.
