Recap Neuromuscular Symposia 2025
We reflect on an inspiring start to the year, marked by the very successful editions of the Research Symposium and the Clinical Neuromuscular Symposium on January 9 and 10.

The third edition of the Research Symposium was preceded by a MYOS coffee- and-lunch-meeting, were our young researchers played a game of “kwartet” to get to know each other and their respective research focus. The symposium once again offered a unique opportunity to meet and interact with NMD-NL researchers. Several invited speakers from Dutch UMCs showcased their research while young researchers presented their work with flash presentations. The day concluded with pizza and drinks, and it was reviewed as a fantastic networking event.
The Clinical Neuromuscular Symposium, titled “Emergency Care in Neuromuscular Disorders” addressed many key aspects: from the differential diagnosis of acute muscle weakness in children and adults, to rhabdomyolysis, muscle and diaphragm weakness in the ICU and decision-making in patients with respiratory weakness. A new feature this year was the presentation of neuromuscular news through news flashes, featuring input from various expertise centers. We also announced the winners of the annual thesis awards, which you can find elsewhere in this Reflex, and MYOS presented an inspiring recap of the Research Symposium. The winner of the exciting neuromuscular quiz was declared “The Smartest NMZ Neurologist” for the coming year.
In total, over 300 professionals attended both symposia. We would like to thank all contributors, especially all presenters; Coen Ottenheijm and Josine de Winter, organizing the Research Symposium; the SCN Neuromuscular Symposium Committee, and Mariska Venhovens and Ada Marres as our supportive team.
