Jeroen Pasterkamp obtained his PhD at the Netherlands Institute of Neuroscience in 2000 followed by postdoctoral training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, USA. In 2004, he joined the Department of Translational Neuroscience of the UMC Utrecht to start a research group studying neural circuit development and disease. Currently he heads the Department of Translational Neuroscience and chairs the UMC Utrecht Brain Center, which represents all patient care, research and teaching at the UMC Utrecht hospital. To facilitate his growing interest in neurodegeneration and iPSC-based brain modelling he founded the MIND facility (mindresearchfacility.nl) which specializes in CNS iPSC and organoids, and associated microscopy. His work in the area of neuromuscular disease focuses on ALS and SMA. He has published studies describing the mechanism-of-action of different ALS gene mutations (e.g. in FUS, C9ORF72, ATXN2) using a variety of models. Currently, his lab strongly focuses on the use human cell and organoid models in combination with microfluidics. Prof. Pasterkamp received numerous awards and prizes, including VENI, VIDI, VICI and Gravitation grants from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, and several grants from ALS Nederland and the Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds.
