Prof. Dr. Nicolette Notermans

  • Role: Full Professor, Neuromuscular Diseases

After completing my medical studies in Nijmegen, I worked for six months as an orthopedic resident at the St. Maartenskliniek in Nijmegen. In 1985, I began my neurology training at the Academic Hospital Utrecht. Early on, I discovered that neuromuscular diseases were the most fascinating area of neurology. In 1994, I completed my PhD on a neuromuscular topic: Chronic Idiopathic Axonal Polyneuropathy (CIAP) and Polyneuropathy Associated with Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS). My interest in polyneuropathy has persisted, and my research remains primarily focused on this area.

I currently chair the working group revising the Polyneuropathy Guidelines for the Dutch Society of Neurology. It is essential to have robust guidelines for neurologists to identify the causes of polyneuropathy, provide accurate diagnoses, and offer patients sound advice on their next steps. Additionally, I serve as chair of the IMAGINE study, a global investigation into the clinical presentation, causes, and treatment of patients with IgM MGUS neuropathy.

My professional focus includes the diagnosis and treatment of all neuromuscular diseases, and I practice as a neuromuscular neurologist across the full spectrum of the field. In 2008, I was appointed Medical Head of Neuromuscular Diseases at UMC Utrecht. Sharing knowledge about neuromuscular diseases is also a passion of mine. Teaching young doctors and aspiring neurologists everything about this specialty is immensely rewarding. Since 2006, I have served as Neuromuscular Diseases Trainer in Utrecht.
