Marise van der Heul
- Role: Speech Therapist, Researcher
After completing my training as a speech therapist, I specialized in eating and swallowing disorders. Pursuing a master’s in Evidence-Based Practice enabled me to engage in scientific research. My work at UMC Utrecht involves a combination of diagnosing eating and swallowing problems in children and conducting research into these issues in patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
UMC Utrecht collaborates with Radboudumc in this research. The aim is to gain more insight into the prevalence and underlying causes of eating and swallowing difficulties in SMA. This includes studying the different phases of swallowing: chewing, transporting, and swallowing liquid or solid foods. Both children and adults are involved in the research. The findings will allow us to provide better advice to SMA patients regarding their eating and swallowing challenges. The goal is to ensure safe swallowing and to optimize the eating and drinking experience as much as possible.
