Marieke van Beugen
- Role: Rehabilitation physician

After completing my medical studies, I chose rehabilitation medicine to help people achieve the best possible quality of life despite their illness, condition, accident, or disability. As a rehabilitation physician, I work closely with a team to achieve this goal. Within our rehabilitation team, I collaborate with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, psychologists, and other specialists as needed.
In rehabilitation, we take a patient-centered approach, meaning we identify the patient’s treatment goals and work towards achieving them as effectively as possible. As both a department head and a rehabilitation physician, I am involved in scientific research conducted by Maastricht University (UM) and carried out within our department.
At UM, research focuses on developing rehabilitation programs that support people in achieving the highest possible quality of life. Key research areas include rehabilitation for chronic pain, improving arm and hand function, and rehabilitation after brain injury. A specific area of interest is also research on pain in neuromuscular diseases.
