My research focuses on the long-term effects and feasibility of exercise training in adult patients with Pompe disease. Building on our 2015 study, we followed up with the original participants and compared them to a new group to assess sustained activity levels and physical outcomes. We found that those meeting the WHO’s physical activity guidelines had better endurance, strength, and function—even a decade later. In a second part of the project, we launched a lifestyle intervention combining exercise with dietary guidance including more severely affected patients, many of whom were overweight. This 24-week program showed promising early results, including weight loss, improved BMI, and enhanced endurance. Final analysis is underway, and we aim to provide evidence supporting tailored exercise as standard care in Pompe disease.
