  • Role: Professor Emerita

My scientific interest in neuromuscular diseases began with research into Becker muscular dystrophy, a condition closely related to Duchenne muscular dystrophy. My focus at the time was on imaging studies of muscles and the involvement of the heart, both underexplored areas at that point. Over time, my attention shifted to the genetic characterization of hereditary polyneuropathies and research into post-polio syndrome, in collaboration with the team led by Prof. Frans Nollet, a rehabilitation physician at Amsterdam UMC.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has also been a traditional research area at Amsterdam UMC, which I have continued to explore, with a particular focus on cognitive and behavioral impairments and collaboration with Prof. Leonard van den Berg’s team at UMC Utrecht.

Another key area of focus is myositis. Together with UMC Utrecht, we played a significant role in establishing a new classification of myositis subtypes, which is crucial for tailoring treatment strategies.

I serve as a medical advisor for the Post-Polio Syndrome and Myositis working groups of Spierziekten Nederland. Additionally, I collaborate internationally in the field of myositis and am a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the American patient organization The Myositis Association.
