My PhD research focuses on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of orthotic treatment for individuals with muscle diseases or nerve injuries resulting in weak leg muscles. Orthopedic shoes or leg orthoses are often used to improve walking, but the design and effectiveness of these devices vary widely.
This study investigates whether custom-made orthoses, fabricated according to a standardized protocol in a specialized center, are more effective and cost-efficient than orthoses provided through standard practice. The results aim to provide insights into the added value of specialized orthotic care for improving overall functioning in individuals with weak leg muscles, with the ultimate goal of enhancing orthotic care for this patient group.
