Dr. Susan Peters

  • Role: Epidemiologist

After completing my Biomedical Sciences degree at Radboud University Nijmegen, I earned my PhD in occupational epidemiology from Utrecht University. Following several years as a researcher in Australia, I returned to Utrecht. Currently, I work as an epidemiologist in the Neurology Department at UMC Utrecht and am also affiliated with Utrecht University (Environmental Epidemiology Department, Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences).

My scientific research focuses on the relationship between environmental exposures and chronic diseases, particularly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Environmental exposures encompass a wide range of factors, including lifestyle choices (e.g., smoking and diet), air pollution, and toxic substances encountered in the workplace. Additionally, potential interactions with genetic predispositions are part of my investigations. The goal of my research is to uncover the causes of ALS, which could provide opportunities for new therapies and preventive measures.
