Dr. H. Stephan Goedee

  • Role: Neurologist

After completing my medical studies at Maastricht University, I specialized in Neurology. During my subspecialization in neuromuscular diseases, I earned a PhD focused on neuromuscular ultrasound. My current research targets diseases of the peripheral nerves (polyneuropathy), including chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN), and polyneuropathy associated with paraproteinemias (IgM MGUS neuropathy). Additionally, I am involved in research on other neuromuscular diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The aim is to use imaging techniques (MRI and ultrasound) to enhance diagnostic precision and predict disease progression in polyneuropathy. This enables earlier initiation of therapy for potentially treatable forms and provides deeper insights into disease mechanisms, guiding interventions to address functional impairments.

I am a member of the quality visitation committee of the Dutch Neurology Association (NVN) and serve as a neurologist and clinical neurophysiologist at UMC Utrecht. Furthermore, I promote the quality and education of neuromuscular ultrasound as an instructor, both through the neuromuscular ultrasound working group and international collaborations.
