Dr. Erik H. Niks

  • Role: Pediatric Neurologist

After studying Medicine in Utrecht, I first worked for a year in the Pediatrics department at LUMC and then completed my neurology training there as well. My PhD research focused on a rare form of myasthenia gravis associated with MuSK antibodies. For this study, I examined and interviewed patients across multiple hospitals in the Netherlands.

In 2008, I started working as a (pediatric) neurologist at LUMC. I received the ‘Fellowship Spierziekten’ from the Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds, which allowed me to relocate with my family to England and spend six months specializing in pediatric neuromuscular diseases at the Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

I am actively involved in the multidisciplinary care of children with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, as well as research on these disorders at LUMC, including international natural history studies and medication trials. In collaboration with Radboudumc and Kempenhaeghe/Maastricht UMC+, we established Duchenne Centrum Nederland. I play a direct role in this initiative to improve care and research for patients with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.

Additionally, I have a strong interest in myasthenic syndromes and the broader care of children with neuromuscular disorders.
