Dr. Corrie E. Erasmus
- Role: Pediatric neurologist
At the Radboudumc Neuromuscular Center, children with (suspected) neuromuscular diseases are seen at the Amalia Children’s Hospital. Since 2005, I have been working as a pediatric neurologist at Radboudumc, coordinating both the diagnostic pediatric neuromuscular center and the multidisciplinary follow-up clinic. As Radboudumc is an expert center for FSHD, many children with facial weakness are referred to me, which has also led to a focus on children with Moebius syndrome. My PhD research addressed swallowing disorders in children, and with this expertise, I became part of the Radboudumc Facial Paralysis Expertise Center. I also continue to coordinate the center for swallowing disorders, where extensive diagnostics and research are conducted.
I serve as a medical advisor for the congenital and metabolic myopathies diagnosis group of Spierziekten Nederland. Additionally, I represent Radboudumc in discussions on the research agenda for myotonic dystrophy, organized by Spierziekten Nederland and the Princess Beatrix Muscle Foundation. I am also one of the coordinators of the national expertise center for myotonic dystrophy (a collaboration with MUMC).
My research focuses on FSHD and myotonic dystrophy in children, along with conducting clinical trials for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. I collaborate closely with colleagues from adult neurology, rehabilitation, and pediatrics for these research projects.
