Dr. Christiaan G.J. Saris

  • Role: Neurologist, clinical neurophysiologist

Since 2014, I have been working as a neuromuscular neurologist and clinical neurophysiologist at Radboudumc. My medical education began in Belgium at the University of Hasselt, but I continued my training in Nijmegen, where I earned my medical degree in 2005. I completed my neurology specialization at UMC Utrecht, during which I conducted research on ALS. This work culminated in my 2014 dissertation, “Genomic biomarkers and genetic risk factors in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.”

My research focuses on improving the diagnosis, understanding, and treatment of symptoms in patients with mitochondrial disorders and inflammatory muscle diseases, such as inclusion body myositis (IBM). I serve on the board of the Radboud Center for Mitochondrial Medicine (RCMM) and am a member of the Radboud Muscle Center, both recognized as expert centers by the Dutch Federation of University Medical Centers (NFU) and the European Reference Network for neuromuscular diseases (EURO-NMD).

I am passionate about training the next generation of doctors and neurologists. I frequently teach medical students and supervise interns in the Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology Department. Sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm for neurology, particularly in the field of muscle diseases, inspires me to guide future professionals in this specialty.

In my clinical practice, I primarily treat patients with mitochondrial disorders and inflammatory muscle diseases. My approach combines the advanced technological resources available at our center (“high tech”) with a personalized, compassionate approach (“high touch”). While muscle diseases are often incurable, I aim to minimize symptoms and improve patients’ quality of life through individualized care.
