During my medical studies at Utrecht University, I became involved in scientific research within the field of neuromuscular diseases, a prominent area of study in Utrecht. After completing my medical degree, I began my PhD research under the supervision of Dr. Ludo van der Pol and Prof. Dr. Leonard van den Berg, focusing on Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). My research specifically examines various aspects of the natural progression of SMA. Additionally, I contribute to several biomarker studies and research into new therapies aimed at improving treatment for this condition.

Camiel defended his dissertation on the ‘natural history’ of SMA in 2020.
