Dr. Camiel Verhamme
- Role: Neurologist, Clinical Neurophysiologist

I work as a clinical neurophysiologist within the Department of Neurology at Amsterdam UMC, focusing on neuromuscular patient care. The neuromuscular center’s scientific research primarily targets inflammatory disorders of peripheral nerves and muscles. My specific focus is on optimizing the diagnostics and follow-up of inflammatory neuropathies (such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, multifocal motor neuropathy, and vasculitis), inflammatory myopathies (myositis), and intensive care-related weakness (critical illness neuromyopathy).
I am particularly interested in the value of neurophysiological techniques and imaging (ultrasound and MRI) of nerves and muscles. In collaboration with the Radiology Department, we are exploring new quantitative MRI techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy.
Within hereditary polyneuropathies, I contribute to research on the phenotype and genotype of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A and hereditary pressure neuropathy. This includes participation in international trials and collaboration with the Rehabilitation Department to study the impact of individually tailored exercise programs on physical fitness and quality of life.
As one of the co-chairs within the Clinical Neurophysiology working group of the European Reference Network for Neuromuscular Diseases, I aim to enhance diagnostics for neuromuscular patients and foster European collaboration in this field.
