- Role: Rehabilitation physician
During my training as a physician and later as a rehabilitation physician, I did not encounter many people with a neuromuscular disease. However, in my first job as a rehabilitation physician, I had to take over the ALS team from a colleague, and since then, I have always been intensely involved with patients with a neuromuscular disorder. Rehabilitation medicine focuses on the consequences of a condition. Not only the diagnosis and prognosis are important, but also the personal needs of the patient. The impact of a disease depends on multiple factors such as age, relationships, employment, living situation, and personal aspirations. With a multidisciplinary treatment team, we strive to help people achieve their goals. The beauty of rehabilitation medicine is that it focuses on what is possible, based on the patient’s personal needs. Listening to what currently hinders people with a neuromuscular disease, we are exploring ways to gain more insight into pain, with the aim of developing effective treatments in the future.
