Bart Jacobs awarded Alan J. Gebhart Prize

Each year, the PNS awards the Alan J. Gebhart Prize for Excellence in Peripheral Nerve Research, recognizing active PNS Members’ ongoing contributions to their mission of “improving the lives of people with peripheral neuropathies.” This year, Professor Bart Jacobs is the co-recipient of this prestigious award. Bart Jacobs is praised for his major contributions to the field of inflammatory neuropathy, notably Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). He has spearheaded many of the major headways across areas of GBS pathogenesis, including his studies on molecular mimicry and anti-ganglioside antibodies, biomarkers, epidemiology, diagnosis, prognostic models and clinical trials. Bart has initiated the International GBS Outcome Study (IGOS), the world’s largest cohort study on GBS. Bart is recognized for helping to make the Erasmus MC one of the most highly regarded centers for GBS and CIDP research worldwide, thanks to his particular strength to collaborate and cooperate widely, interacting extensively with many experts in diverse fields, ranging from basic chemistry, through immunology to physiology and bioinformatics. And last but not least, Bart is commended for his substantial commitment to teaching and training.
