Farewell Symposium Pieter van Doorn
On Friday, 23 January 2026, we bid farewell to Pieter van Doorn with a memorable symposium and, in his own words, a phenomenal celebration.
The farewell symposium, Peripheral Nerve Diseases – from care to cure, marked his remarkable career and extensive national and international network. Throughout the years, Pieter has made an exceptional contribution to the care and research of patients with neuromuscular diseases, especially polyneuropathies. Together with colleagues and research partners from the Netherlands and abroad, we reflected on promising developments in the field of peripheral nerve disorders and on new treatments for patients with neuromuscular diseases.

In recognition of his outstanding work, Deputy Mayor Robert Simons surprised Pieter with a Royal Honour: he was appointed Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion. After the symposium, the farewell continued with a festive evening at Sociëteit De Maas, lasting well into the night. There, Pieter received a beautiful liber amicorum on behalf of all guests, titled Guidelines for the Emeritus Neurologist, filled with memories, advice, and many of the flowcharts he is so fond of.
The evening offered an opportunity not only to look back, but above all to celebrate with family, friends, and colleagues. Fortunately, this is not a complete goodbye: in the coming period, we will still be seeing Pieter regularly in his role as researcher.
