Dr. Ruth Huizinga
- Role: Assistant Professor
During my studies in medical biology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, I developed a strong interest in neuroimmunology. As a PhD candidate, I conducted laboratory research on autoimmunity against axons as a mechanism of nerve damage in multiple sclerosis.
Currently, I work as a scientific researcher in the Department of Immunology at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. My research focuses on immune-mediated disorders of the peripheral nervous system, particularly Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). I investigate the immunological mechanisms that lead to the development of antibodies against glycolipids and aim to understand why only a small number of people develop GBS following a relatively common infection. Part of my research was conducted at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.
Additionally, I teach histology and immunology to bachelor’s students in medicine and master’s students in Infection & Immunity.
