Dr. Corrie E. Erasmus
- Role: Pediatric neurologist, Associate Professor
At the Radboudumc Neuromuscular Center, children with suspected or confirmed neuromuscular disorders are evaluated and treated at the Amalia Children’s Hospital. Since 2005, I have worked as a paediatric neurologist at Radboudumc, where I coordinate both the paediatric neuromuscular diagnostic program and the multidisciplinary follow-up clinic.
As Radboudumc is a recognized expertise centre for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), many children with facial weakness are referred to our team. This clinical work has also led to a special interest in Moebius syndrome and other disorders affecting facial function. My PhD focused on swallowing disorders in children, expertise that contributed to my involvement in the Radboudumc Facial Paralysis Expertise Center. In addition, I coordinate the centre for paediatric swallowing disorders, combining advanced diagnostics with clinical research.
In March 2025, I was appointed Associate Professor of Paediatric Neuromuscular Disorders.
I serve as a medical advisor to the Congenital & Metabolic Myopathies and FSHD diagnosis groups of Spierziekten Nederland. I am also a board member of Duchenne Centre Nederland and co-chair of the Paediatric Working Group of the FSHD European Trial Network.
My research focuses on FSHD and congenital myopathies in children, as well as clinical trials in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. These projects are conducted in close collaboration with colleagues in adult neurology, rehabilitation medicine, paediatrics, and allied healthcare disciplines, with the shared goal of improving diagnosis, care, and treatment opportunities for children with neuromuscular disorders.
