Dr. J. Merlijn van den Berg
- Role: Pediatric Rheumatologist/Immunologist
I completed my training as a pediatrician and later as a pediatric rheumatologist at Amsterdam UMC (AMC). Since 2008, I have been a staff member within the Department of Pediatrics, where my team and I are responsible for the care of children with autoimmune diseases. Some of these conditions primarily cause inflammation of the muscles, with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) being the most notable example.
Children with JDM are evaluated collaboratively with pediatric neurology colleagues, while ongoing treatment is managed under our care. JDM is a rare condition that can sometimes have a severe course. Fortunately, over the past decade, we have observed significant improvements in outcomes for this challenging disease.
Nationally, we work closely with pediatric rheumatologists from other academic centers. For example, we participate in a Dutch study (based in Utrecht) investigating biomarkers to better understand the development and progression of JDM. Additionally, we coordinate a nationwide study on vascular aspects in children with autoimmune diseases, including JDM. This study is led by my colleague, Ms. Schonenberg.
